We began the New Year with a major change: I (Steve) am no longer working at our mission HQ near High Wycombe, where I’ve been based for the past twelve years. The immediate reason was pressure on office space. My three rooms—two offices and a small kitchen to cater for teams who come with Scripture to be typeset—have not been fully used recently (for reasons, see below). I could have moved to smaller offices at the Wycliffe Centre, but chose instead to work from my office at home.
So will my small home-office suffice? Yes and no.
No, because there may still be times when I need to work with a team; but when that happens a room will be made available at the Wycliffe Centre. And yes, because with new computer programs and growing internet access in third world cities, more work can be done from a distance.
There are also fewer British translators coming back to the UK for typesetting, and there are prospects that I’ll spend more time connecting directly with teams by internet and email. This is because Bible translation is increasingly being done by nationals.
It’s been sad to move out of the suite of three offices that have served my needs so well, as well as those of the teams I’ve worked with. Valuable archives—printed publications, disk and CD backups, etc.—were left behind to be placed in secure storage at the Wycliffe Centre.
Squeezing the remaining essential files, books and equipment into a much smaller space at home has been like forcing the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle!
In short—a smaller office, but an increasing network of connections with Africa (where most of my work comes from). We are both happy with this new development. Thank you for your ongoing prayers, even though you didn’t know what was going on!
